Jun 08, 2014 · At times a bad master cylinder can dump brake fluid back into the booster so it won’t show up. These are not fool proof checks…But they can give some hints/clues. Also there is the pedal bleed down test. I personally would double check the rear adjustment of the shoes, and then chase after master cylinder issues.
while driving and trying to stop the brake pedal became very hard to push. had the brake booster replaced. now after only 6 months the brake pedal is soft. had the master cylinder replaced and it is still acting the same. this is unsafe and will not pass inspection. this is a common problem according to my research with ford edges.
I removed the master cylinder, re bled it and did seem to get some air there, then reinstalled it and rebled everything. Still no air from any of the 4 wheels. The brake pedal still feels really soft. I did the functional checks of the brake booster and it passed.

Oct 11, 2008 · It is more common on older vehicles where the master cylinder lip seal gets torn on an unpolished, corroded, and previously unused section of the bore. If you cannot resolve the problem, it is worth checking the master cylinder seals and, when re-bleeding, putting a block, under the brake pedal, to reduce it's stroke.
After a short while, the brake pedal got mushy so I replaced the master cylinder because I couldn't find anymore air in the system. Before I could even get the car out of the garage, the brake line blew out at the rear mounted proportioning valves.

Apr 27, 2010 · I replaced all the brakes with the best available parts, no help. Performed abs diagnostics & replaced the controller per test results. No help, light still on. Replaced the ABS hydraulic unit, ABS light went off, but still spongy pedal. Replaced the master cylinder and booster, brake pedal is much, much better, but still not perfect.

After all that we did your basic pump brakes and bleed all the lines, but ever since then it was still a squishy pedal.
